St. George's Slayers, led by a team-high 24 points from the wily shooting guard Leon Chung, turned back a spirited challenge from newcomers Majesty Gardens in their 87-75 win in a KFC National Basketball League match at the newly refurbished Edgewater Community Centre Basketball Court yesterday.
Chung's teammate Michael Jackson contributed 23 points, while Majesty Gardens' Kemar McLeish had a game-high 25 points and Christopher Gaynor came off the bench to deliver 20 points, including four three-pointers.
Slayers led from start to finish. The winners took the first quarter 19-14 and the second quarter 21-19 to be up by seven (40-33) at the half-way stage. Majesty Gardens, with the influence of Gaynor and McLeish, came out strong in the third quarter and Slayers had to draw on their experience to hold off the tough challenge, as the quarter ended with the score 60-55 in favour of Slayers.
The fourth quarter was a Chung and Gaynor show. As Chung delivered for Slayers, Gaynor was there to answer for his team, but the Slayers squad was too deep and that was the defining moment in the end, as the victors outscored Majesty Gardens 27-20 in the final quarter.
