The lead story in last Saturday's STAR was indeed a very disturbing one.
According to the story, a female teacher from a prominent high school in Montego Bay is the ring leader of a very active, visible lesbian group. The fact that lesbians exist in high school is nothing new, but what makes this story interesting is knowing that the group was created by a teacher - someone set in a position of authority to guide the children along the right path. Such behaviour on her part is a definite betrayal of trust.
That the teacher is using study groups as an excuse to indulge in illicit sexual activities with students or, in some cases, to oversee the interaction between other students is highly disturbing and quite frankly this teacher is in need of professional help.
Does she really think such actions are normal? Does she see herself as a role model for these young girls?
Even if these girls were lesbians before they came into contact with this teacher, it is not her place to encourage them or to facilitate their activities. The parents of some of these girls would probably die if they knew what their daughters were involved in, and it is likely that they would die again when they discovered that a teacher was the mastermind behind the 'lesbian ring'.
It is sad to know that a teacher, a figure that is expected to lead young minds along the right path, is abusing her authority and engaging in such dreadful activities. If the authorities ever find out who she is, she should not be allowed near children for a very long time.
