A woman discovered recently that the man she married in April 2005 was not her husband because he did not divorce his wife.
She complained that she was shocked when she received a telephone call from a woman in England who told her that her marriage was not valid.
"Can you imagine the shock when I received the phone call from this woman telling me that the man I was married to was in fact not my husband.
"The woman said she did not know of the marriage until recently and so she could not inform me of the situation before. She began crying and even told me that she loved her husband very much and did not intend to give him up.
"I met the man who I married five years ago when he came to Jamaica on holidays. We got married two years ago and he has promised to send for me.
He visits Jamaica twice per year since then and I really am in love with him.
"I telephoned him in England to tell him that I heard he did not divorce his wife before he married me and he became upset and said he can afford to maintain two wives and he even said he loved both of us.
"I cannot continue to live my life like this so I have decided to end the relationship with him."
The man you married has committed bigamy. Section 71 of the Offences against the Person Act states in part that "whosoever, being married, shall marry any other person during the life of the former husband or wife, whether the second marriage shall have taken place in this Island or elsewhere, shall be guilty of felony, and being convicted thereof, shall be liable to be imprisoned for a term not exceeding four years".
