Kane Watson - file
Jamaica's men's and women's teams have had mixed fortune so far in the Caribbean Table Tennis Championships.
The men's team beat French Guiana 3-0 while the women lost 1-3 to Puerto Rico. National champion Yvonne Foster won the lone match for the women.
Defending men's champions are Puerto Rico. Defending women's champions, Mexico, are not participating in this year's tournament.
Meanwhile 19-year-old Kane Watson who has been a member of Jamaica's senior table tennis team for several years will leave the island today for high level training in China. The training period will last for six weeks and he will be based at the Western China Training Centre, in Chendu, which is located in the Shichuan Province in Western China.
The trip is sponsored by the Chinese Government through the Chinese Embassy in Jamaica, who offered the training opportunity and asked the JTTA to select a player to take up the offer.
It was easy for the Jamaica Table Tennis Association (JTTA) to choose Watson, who is a past student of Kingston College and presently a second year student in computing at the University of Technology. While at high school, he was a leading member of the table tennis team, helping the school to dominate school boy table tennis for many years, and in addition, has always been an excellent student academically.
He is expected to continue representing Jamaica for many years to come, and will benefit immensely from this training.
