Masters turn in creditable performances at national championships

Master athlete, Dr. Maynard McIntosh - file

Athletes representing the Jamaica Masters Athletics Association turned in creditable performances at the recently concluded Puma/Supreme Ventures National Athletics Championships at the National Stadium.

The hotly contested 100 metres in the male section saw Samuel Brevett eking out a win over Leeroy Gray. Brevett's time was 11.31 seconds to Gray's 11.34. Dr. Maynard McIntosh recovered from a disastrous start to grab third place in 11.81. Completing the race were Lorrel Smith - fourth in 12.03; Claston Morgan fifth in 12.08; Chester Wiles was sixth in 12.47 and Tyrone Grey seventh in 13.03. Dennis Reid was disqualified for false starting.

Dasy win for daley

In the women's section, pre-race favourite Charmaine Daley romped home in 12.88 with Yvette Burgher taking the runner-up spot in 13.43 and Ann-Marie Ricketts third in 13.82. Rosemarie Henry was fourth in 14.56.

In the 1,500 metres which witnessed a combined male and female field facing the starter, Troy Irons outclassed his rivals to take the top spot with Maxwell Smith taking second and Richard Brown third.

Karlene Blagrove copped the gold medal in the women's race with Ann-Marie Shaw taking second and 65 year-old Ceceile Bordato finishing third.

Morgan places third in world

It is interesting to note that though he finished fifth in the 100m, Claston Morgan's 12.08 places him at number 3 in the world in his age category of 55 plus. Maynard McIntosh's time of 11.81 gave him a number six world ranking in his age category of 45 plus. His time of 53.63 done in the 400m earlier this year places him second in his age category. Ceceile Bordato who finished third in the 1,500m is among the top ten in the world in her age category of 65 plus.

The masters are gearing up for the World Masters Championships scheduled for Italy in September, this year. The team has already appealed to corporate Jamaica to assist in defraying the cost of $3m to attend the championships.

The team in an effort to assist with its own fund-raising will be having a Jazz and Garden Lyme in Jack's Hill on Sunday, July 15.
