Another political flimflam or ...?

My Friend P has been asking why is it that I have not been writing anything on politics? Well, I explained to him that we Jamaicans are generally too serious about politicking and often take ourselves far too seriously when it comes to the publicity of politics, and so I steer away unless something happens I cannot help but comment on.

And even worse, now that elections are in the air, it is probably even more important for me to keep my distance, but what the heck, up comes the introduction of Miss Jamaica World 1993, Lisa Hanna, into the picture and I cannot - I repeat - cannot help myself. I really, really tried to.

What is there to say about Ms. Hanna? Well, I have had the distinct pleasure of interviewing this young lady post her Miss World achievements, and I can say without doubt that she has a lot more than sand in between those ears. That's right, she is no dunce - despite a media slip here and there [human stuff] she is more than average smarts.

Of course, I will argue that with some of the twits that we have had sitting in the esteemed Gordon House as representatives of the people - Ms Hanna is light years ahead of the game.

Media attention

I, too, am most pleased to see that Ms. Hanna is still Ms. Hanna and not using the appendage of her union and being called Mrs. Panton or Mrs. Hanna-Panton. She recognises that she is somebody, was somebody and will always be somebody.

But what of her entry into politics and her being foisted upon the people? I have written before that this practice is quite wrong. In fact, I have been very clear in stating that I feel that the laws should be changed that require constituency representatives to hail from and reside in the communities that they claim to represent. And Ms Hanna's entry has provided yet another spike for my cause.

That said, this is no special case for Ms Hanna, since I do not think that her predecessor hailed from the community, and there are so many other reps and wannabe reps that are so foreign to the people they purport to speak for that they ought to need visas and special passports just to enter those communities.

The Hanna card, though, is indeed a stroke of slight genius for the People's National Party, though that can either go very, very right or turn out horribly wrong. Certainly, in the quest for media attention a pretty, female, well-known, controversial face is a great plus.

We watch now just to see how big the former queen of the world's feet are, and if they will have to fit in her mouth whenever she speaks. The times to come shall be interesting. Will she squeal, holler, rant, gwaan bad, diplomatically mumble, or just be plain old boring when she is required to mouth remarks on the campaign trail behind the podium in front of thousands of strange crowds?

Or will she be a silent partner, a secret weapon [that has no ammunition]. Hmmm, interesting times.

What does the Jamaica Labour Party do now? Well, to respond in kind is hardly possible - there are no more current world queens around that quite stands beside Ms Hanna - or maybe the mother of the popular Marley might do? Hmmm. What they might be best advised to do is not to go gunning for the queen without reason - such a creature carries martyrdom within her veins - best be advised let her be and hope she will undo herself.
