'Kings of Soul' sing for the ladies

It was indeed ladies' night at the much-touted Kings of Soul concert, held at the Constant Spring Golf Club on Saturday night.

Despite being a Father's Day concert, it was mainly women that showed up to support the men on stage.

Flocks of women came and swooned over the likes of Christopher Martin, the Manhattans, the Fonics, Shai, Billy Ocean and James Ingram.

The event started late and there were numerous empty seats in the expensive VIP section and general sections.

What would usually have been free drinks in the VIP section had more than a few patrons disgruntled after the bartender told the crowd that there were "no complimentary drinks."

The long line for food was soon cut short as the food ran out and one very upset lady argued with the persons serving.

Christopher Martin eased the tension of the impatient ladies and sang The Reason, and his very own Christopher Giving It.

"Chris come and give it to me!" shouted an overzealous fan.

After a good set, Martin made way for the older Fonics who were matched out in blue suits. The group moved nimbly to hits of the the Motown era.

Marvin Brown created quite a stir with his shrill falsetto.

While the crowd liked the hits such as La La La Means I Love You, after a while they got quite impatient as the time progressed.

The Manhattans brought a little comedy with their act and had the women standing and singing along to Kiss And Say Goodbye, Never Find Another and others.

Shai was also brief. However, their hit If I Ever Fall In Love Again went straight to the heartstrings of the crowd.

It was then time for the highly anticipated Billy Ocean. The Trinidadian crooner showed off his 'Trini wine' and sang Caribbean Queen, What Is The Colour Of Love, Love Really Hurts Without You, and many more. His pleasant demeanour, had the crowd contented.

Several patrons who were dissatisfied with the 45-minute band change before James Ingram, the final act.

The dedicated few hung around to hear the crooner proclaim a Hundred Ways, Just Once, and many more.

With the police lurking around the venue ever ready to intervene if the show overran its course, Ingram's strong voice carried into the night.
