An 'Honourable' day with Munga

Munga Honourable records a song at Don Corleone's studio in St. Andrew recently. - Colin Hamilton

by Teino Evans, Staff Reporter

The Star artiste for the month of June, Munga Honourebel, is one who makes the most of any given day.

Dancehall's hottest, new sensation is not forgetful of his roots. He makes sure to save time for the persons who have been around him before his rise to stardom.

The STAR team spent an entire day with the artiste, who started off with rasta 'meditation and reasoning'.

"Wi jump off right yah suh," Munga said, as he relaxed under the cool shade of a tree in the yard of 'David House', one of Capleton's residences located in Cassia Park.

"Yah suh wi gwaan listen some new riddim, smoke some herb and hold wi regula reasoning. A dem people yah wi deh roun from zero, everybody eat out a di same pot, bun di same herb ... a jus our 'bubble of reality' dis, anything outside a dat a faith," Munga said.

As Munga sings a song to the beat of a new rhythm being played in his car stereo, he says, "Dah riddim yah nuh name yet, bran new ting, suh wi do it."

After leaving 'David House', Munga and his entourage headed to 'J Town' (Jackson Town) along Molynes Road where Munga said, "a yah suh mi spen some a mi teenage years growing up".

Immediately, a small crowd flocked Munga, and it was obvious that stops in J Town are a regualr thing.

"From dem man yah nuh deh abroad yuh haffi call it seh him deh yah everyday," Dreamer, a resident and friend of Munga said.

According to Munga, "Mi born a St. Mary, Islington, an mi finish school a Kingston a Tarrant Comprehensive, up till di late part a fifth form before mi get wild inna di ting," as he was later expelled.

Well, so much for hanging out on the corner, as the rest of the day was all about doing some serious studio time and cutting dubs.

From linking with Mr. G and listening to a new rhythm he had, to dropping a few dubs at the Enrapture Studio on Red Hills Road.

The day ended at Don Corleon's studio where Munga would again put his lyrical creativity to work.

According to Munga, working with Don Corleon was, "some-what like a vision come through. Just like how artiste woulda feel hearing dem song pon di radio fi di first time, is dat. Working wid Don, di biggest producer inna Jamaica ... whole heap a artiste woulda join line fi work wid him, an some would seh mi lucky, but me seh mi blessed."

Happy birthday Munga!!!

The STAR would like to extend its warmest birthday wishes to the Artiste of the Month, Munga Honourebel aka Damian Rhoden, who turns 27 today.

The eloquent and talented star was born bad and bold in Islingston, St. Mary. True to his roots, Munga will be going home to Islington to celebrate with his family, friends and fans. He takes pride in having been born in the same month as one of his musical idols, Bounty Killer, as he says in his song Bad From Mi Born, "Munga bad from the first day/My birthday is next to Killa birthday."

To Munga, we hope you keep turning out many more hit songs.
