PHILIP Feanny's BLUE MAGIC, one of the favourites for the $4.25 million Jamaica Derby on June 2, could instead start in the 1200-metre Facey Sprint, worth $800,00, following his victory at 1000 metres round on yesterday's 11-race card at Caymanas Park.
BLUE MAGIC, the son of 2002 Triple Crown winner, SIMPLY MAGIC, started as the 6-5 favourite to win the May 23 Lotto Classic for the Governor's Cup at 2000 metres, a major prep race for the Derby.
However, the speedy colt led to the final furlong where he was overhauled by MUCHO GUSTO and eventual winner IL CAIMANO.
Yesterday's win, a week and a half before the 2400-metre Derby, strongly indicated BLUE MAGIC is being primed for the shorter race.
Feanny already has a strong hand in the Derby as RUM TALK, the champion two-year-old and 2000 Guineas winner, is the ante-post favourite for the event.
Face the champion
Should BLUE MAGIC line up in the Facey Sprint, he is set to face champion trainer Wayne DaCosta's RUN ALDEENO, who ran a cracker to place third in the 2000 Guineas and returned to blaze 1:06.3 for 1100 metres on May 12.
Meanwhile, another Derby aspirant, THE BOMBER, trained by Patrick Lynch, warmed up with a near seven-length win at 1820 metres, beating Richard Azan's ROMEZ into fourth place.
Winston Griffiths was again aboard THE BOMBER, who has now won twice from as many starts following his impressive May 5 debut over 1500 metres.
Yesterday's feature, the 1200-metre Labour Day Trophy, was won by 17-1 outsider FORMULA ONE, ridden by Oneil Mullings.
The seven-year-old gelding chased RIGMAROLE into the lane and scored a battling win in a driving finish, lasting home by three quarters of a length.
Carlton Malcolm had two winners on the day, ABSOLUTE STORMER in the first race and CAT LEGEND in the 11th at 1300 metres.
