Holmwood Technical and Calabar High schools, winners of this year's Inter-Secondary Schools Boys and Girls Athletic Championships, claimed additional prizes on Wednesday.
Each institution received one year's free high speed Internet service from Cable & Wireless Jamaica (CWJ) at a presentation function held at the company's Carlton Crescent office.
In addition to the prizes handed over to the schools, Yohan Blake of St. Jago High School, the most outstanding male athlete of the 2007 championships and his female counterpart Salcia Slack of Holmwood Technical, were rewarded with new laptops as well as a year's free ADSL service .
Also rewarded were coaches Maurice Wilson of Holmwood Technical, Michael Clarke of Calabar and Danny Hawthorne, who guided St. Jago to an impressive championships, despite finishing out of the top three.
St. Jago became the first schoolboy team in the history of Jamaica to run sub-40 seconds in the 4x100m - 39.80 and a record time in the 4x400m.
In handing over the prizes, the company's senior vice president, Internet and Voice Services, Roger Richards, congratulated the coaches and the athletes on their exceptional performances at the meet and reiterated his company's commitment to facilitating access to Information and Com-munications Technology (ICT) in schools.
"All of us at Cable & Wireless understand how important it is for students to have Internet service for research and assignments and also for exposure to the world beyond their communities and their country and where it is feasible we are committed to making it available to schools," he said.
Cable & Wireless provided more than $3 million in sponsorship for this year's Inter-Secondary Schools Athletic Championships as part of a three-year deal valued at approximately $10 million.
