Inner-city youths complete betterment course

Spanish Town

Hundreds of children ages 12-18 marched through Spanish Town on Saturday morning. The march was done to mark the end of Children's Game which was put on by several churches to heal the minds of several children in inner-city communities.

From as early as 8 a.m., the children who came from areas such as Beacon Hill, St. Johns Road and Hampton Green were awarded certificates of participation after they successfully completed a six-week course where they were trained to be better people.

According to Sean Williams of Whole Life Sports Ministry, the aim of the exercise was to take the children who do not go to church, and show them that through sound Christian principles and sports, their lives could be transformed making them better for the future.

Several of the participants expressed thanks for the inaugural exercise and hoped that it would continue. According to Chamber of Commerce President Dennis Robothom, the exercise is a sound one that will instil good habits into the participants and show them another way out.

"This gesture of the nine churches giving the children a chance will work wonders as it will show them that they are still very good role models out there. It will heal their little minds."

As a way of displaying how the kids game will work, they were given sporting tasks such as football, cricket, sprinting and other activities to make them complete players.

The end ceremony also saw several talent pieces, a marching band and the handing over of cheques from First Caribbean to the participants.
