Intriguing battle for top scorer

by LeVaughn Flynn, Staff Reporter

Waterhouse midfielder Irvino English disrupted the top-scorer race on Sunday when he scored five times to become the leading marksman in the Wray and Nephew National Premier League with 16 goals.

English, who wasn't considered a real contender with only three games left, helped his side to a 9-2 thrashing of relegated Wadadah at the Waterhouse Mini Stadium.

English, who could become the second consecutive Waterhouse player to win the award following Kevin Lamey's 22 goals last season, should have more chances at goal when his side plays away to August Town tomorrow, then host Boys' Town on Sunday in the final match of the 2006-07 season.

Also in contention for the top scorer award are Harbour View's strike pair of Kavin Bryan (14) and Fabian Taylor (12) and Reno's Ricardo Scott (13).

Unlike Sunday, Waterhouse should face more formidable opponents in August Town tomorrow. The promoted side lost only their second game of the round on Sunday, a 3-1 defeat to Portmore United, and should still be motivated to win their remaining games. However, they can finish no higher than their current sixth position, as fifth-place Tivoli Gardens are eight points clear.

Crowned champions Harbour View play Wadadah, and if Sunday's game is anything to go by, the Montego Bay team could be in line for another hiding.

Seba United, who just escaped relegation, sure fooled the masses when they shocked Portmore United with a 2-0 defeat in their opening game last September.

They have since recorded seven more wins and an eighth seems unlikely as they face Tivoli tomorrow and second-place Portmore on Sunday.

Portmore will travel to Collie Smith Drive to play Boys' Town with a spot in the Caribbean Club Championships as motivation. Reno, two points behind Portmore, will also have the same motivation when they go up against Village United.

The other relegated team, Naggo Head, which apparently acquired coach Wayne Fairclough and the additional players too late, play Arnett Gardens.
