Portmore-based Independence City Football Club secured the fourth and final semi-final spot in the Juciful-sponsored St Catherine Major League on Saturday with a 2-0 win over Waterloo at the Tredegar Park playing field.
The win pushed Independence City to 28 points from 16 games, three behind Zone Two winners and fellow semi-finalists Bodles. Bodles beat third-place Meadows 1-0 Saturday to tally 31 points. Meadows are on 23 points and have a game in hand.
The Zone One semi-finalists are the Spanish Town pair of D.B. Basovak and Tru Juice."It's been tough to get the players to understand my system of play.
"Understanding and commitment is the key, and if we do all these things consistently we will win more games," Independence City coach Carl Reid said. He added: "We did what we need to do to qualify and our next task is the semi-final."
Ricardo Williams (37th) and Oneil Campbell (88th) scored the goals for Independence City. Incidentally, the game was not without drama as Waterloo's Curtis Taylor was given marching orders by veteran referee Hughill Thompson in the 39th minute of play for violent conduct.
He is set to appear before the competition's disciplinary committee. Waterloo FC's coach Patrick Lewis saw the game as a disappointing way to end the season. "We really wanted to end the season on a high (by winning this game), but things didn't go to plan," Lewis said. No date has yet been set for the playing of the semi-finals.
