Harbour View are a win away from securing this year's Premiership title following their untroubled 5-0 home win yesterday against Seba United.
Kavin Bryan (64th, 89th), Fabian Taylor (68th), Kemeel Wolfe (ninth) and Christopher Harvey (29th) improved Harbour View's overall score to 64 points, 10 ahead of second-place Portmore United.
There was something peculiar, however, about yesterday's game at the Harbour View Mini Stadium. Perhaps it was the unusually early 4:30 start for Harbour View, who normally play at night. They were disciplined for the most part but seemed too suave in their approach.
Quiet confidence
Their seemingly laissez-faire demeanour belied the significance of the game as a win would help to ensure they win the title earlier. Even the mood in the stands was light and more easygoing than usual.
Perhaps it is the quiet confidence of a team and a community that know the title belongs to them this year despite four games remaining.
"We should win the title," said Barry Brown, a former Harbour View player and Waterhouse coach who still lives in the community.
"They've been conceding goals but their strikers have been consistent. And you can see the players are comfortable with each other and with the coach. He's getting what he wants so he doesn't have to be on the sideline pulling out his hair."
A win against Naggo Head on Wednesday will secure the title as Harbour View's 10-point lead will become unassailable.
"We still have one game to go (before winning the title) against Naggo Head and we are taking it very seriously," said Harbour View coach Lenworth Hyde. "As I said (before yesterday's game), we want to win all five remaining games and we have to find something to motivate the players."
Hyde said one motivation will be for his two top scorers Bryan and Taylor, with 12 goals each and tied with Reno's Ricardo Scott, to get the top scorer award.
Second-place Portmore United, who drew 2-2 with Wadadah, made Harbour View's task easier as they drew their second consecutive game. Cheers emanated from the sparsely populated stadium when it was announced that Portmore, who were leading 2-0, had drawn with Wadadah.
"A the best announcement yu mek fi di day," said one Harbour View loyalist. "We just need one more win," said another in reference to securing the title.
Shortly after that announcement, Bryan made it 3-0. That goal evoked the most celebration and with good reason.
Bryan, who had the ball on the edge of the 18-yard box with his back to goal, quickly turned inside his marker then fired high in the roof of the net. Before him, Wolfe struck a volley and Harvey converted a penalty. Taylor had an easy goal from a few feet away while Bryan got his second by outrunning his defender from near the half-line as Seba goalie Neil Lynch saw the fifth ball rattle the back of his net.
Impressive Whitmore
Theodore Whitmore's experience playing in England made him look impressive among his teammates. The former national player had a presence in the midfield but that's where Seba's attack ended. Whitmore also had one of the two accurate shots on goal. Seba's loss and Wadadah's draw with Portmore mean Seba are nine points ahead but could replace 11th-place Wadadah in the relegation zone if they are not careful.
Naggo Head's relegation became official following their 2-0 loss to Village United. Lacon Brissett and Edward Campbell helped push Village to seventh on 37 points.
A Fabian Davis penalty gave Tivoli Gardens a 1-0 win over Waterhouse, Reno beat Boys' Town 3-1 and August Town beat Arnett Gardens 3-1.
