Two pensioners die in house fire

GEORGE HENRY, STAR Writer

spaldings, clarendon

Two Clarendon pensioners are now dead following a fire which destroyed a five bedroom board house at Bailleston in that parish on Saturday. Dead are Norma Newton, 68, and her 70-year-old brother Willy Newton who were both living together.

According to police reports about 8 p.m., Newton was seen running from the house calling for help with his head on fire.

However, by the time neighbours went to his assistance he fell to the ground and died.

It is reported that neighbours tried to assist his sister Norma who was trapped in the burning house, but were unable to do so as the house was already engulfed in flames. The Spaldings police were alerted as well as the Christiana Fire Department.

When the police and fire personnel arrived on the scene, Norma's body which was burnt beyond recognition was removed from the rubble.

Detective Corporal Martin Morgan of the Spaldings police Station who is the investigating officer said no foul play is suspected, but said that the police will continue to probe the incident.
