MAKYN the NEWS

A youngster smiles as he looks at Oneil. - Ricardo Makyn photos

At 18 most young men are thinking about many material things such as cars, clothing and the works, but not Oneil Hibbert, more popularly known as "Pecos" by members of his community. He is the man who travels by stilts.

I met Pecos when I stopped at a shop to purchase a phone card in the rural community of Bog Hole in northern Clarendon, almost on the border of Clarendon and St Ann. I heard this sound as if wood was hitting the ground but did not notice anything until he dismounted from his bamboo stilts.

I was amazed because trust me I would have never been the one to attempt this. Imagine losing your balance and falling? That definitely is not a good thought but that doesn't seem to stop young Pecos, who seems to have a young following in his area. Hey maybe some day he'll form his own circus. Remember he is Jamaican and nothing's impossible for us.

The very talented Oneil Hibbert mounts his bamboo stilts.
