A motorist who used his vehicle to hit down two policemen who were trying to prosecute him for operating contrary to the terms of his licence, was fined a total of $28,000 or 12 months imprisonment when he appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
Gary Brown, of Spanish Town, St. Catherine, is said to have committed the offence on February 19 at about 5 p.m.
Sergeant Osbourne Fearon of the Spanish Town Traffic Department, said Brown was spotted by the lawmen along Brunswick Avenue, operating a 'robot' taxi. The lawmen, on motorcycles, signalled him to stop and he disobeyed and sped off with them chasing.
The lawmen stopped behind Brown's vehicle on Job Lane, and told him to come out. Instead he reversed the vehicle hitting down both policemen and drove away. The lawmen suffered severe injuries to their legs. Mr Brown was not seen until he was picked up by the Ocho Rios police on April 5 when a warrant was
executed on him.
In court, he told Resident Magistrate Lorna Gayle, that he is guilty. The judge subsequently fined him $25,000 for dangerous driving, $3,000 for disobeying the signal of a policeman. If the fines are not paid, he will serve 12 months. His licence was also
suspend for one year.
