Music silences barking guns

Once again another war-torn community has called a ceasefire to end the blood shed and fighting that was tearing it apart.

According to the Thursday STAR's lead story, Maverley has been united by the same thing that once divided them. According to the story a number of parties being held on opposing sides of the community and are all getting the support of everybody.

This story proves more than ever how powerful music can be. It was so strong it caused violence in a community causing more despair and pain for the residents. But it was also so powerful that it caused the people to unite and stop the foolishness.

It is clear that music is a tool that many of these war-torn communities can relate to. Recently another STAR story reported that the notorious Clansman and One Order gangs in Spanish Town had called a ceasefire also largely for the same reasons.

Both sides had parties which not only created an avenue for people to enjoy themselves but to also earn money. The men who use to fire shots at each other, were instead supporting each other's drive to be successful.

It is clear that one key factor in bringing peace to many of our violence ridden communities is within our reach, but this can only be achieved if we recognise its force and really use it to do the good that it truly can.

We only hope that once music has been used to bring about peace, the peace will be sustained for years to come.
