And the battle has begun

Blazin Vibes dancing to You Raise Me Up, in the contemprpary category, the newest genre in the MiPhone Dancin' Dynamite competition.

Carolyn Johnson, Freelance Writer

As the second season of MiPhone Dancin' Dynamites heats up, Untou-chable Squad and Crazy 2 became the first casualties.

The two groups received the lowest points last week, 13 and 15 respectively and have given way to the final 12 contestants. Two more teams will be dropped this week as the competition prunes its way to the best dance duo in Jamaica.

Last week, the genres were scrambled, the moves were fierce and the costumes commendable. Contemporary, the newest and so far exciting genre, has been thrown in the mix along with Latin, dancehall, traditional and soca. The guest judge was Trinidadian Greer Iton, a very generous lady with her comments and her points allotment.

Business

But two weeks into the competition, the dancers are showing that they mean business. No longer is Latin dance by two men taboo, but almost 'proper'. Each group showed some research of their allotted genre, both in dress and presentation while their eye contact with the audience has also got better. Crazy Hype was the lowest scoring group on 19.

At the top of the scale are Attitude Brothers 28 and Kimbe, 27. For their performance, the former received two 10s and an eight. Dressed in full black, Attitude Brothers got dancehall genre and showed they were at home with it. Their moves were creative and exciting, but what got the crowd excited were their moves for Erup's Gal a Run Dem Head.

One dancer wore a hat and a basin while the other admonished him for his behaviour. The audience went wild. The judges described the performance as entertaining and 'dandimite', "because de ting set right". The dancers were, however, penalised for too much unison in their performance and were advised to focus on their hands and less on their legs.

Sex on stage

The public's choice trio were the last to perform. Within this group were Blazin Vibes, Kimbe and S Squad, the highest voted dancers. Here the audience got their first glimpse of the contemporary genre with Blazin Vibes performing to You Raise Me Up. There was indeed much raising and soaring.

The second exciting performance came with Kimbe. Dancing to an instrumental of Missing You Now, one audience member described it as sex on stage. It was a very intense and sensual performance, even the audience was caught up in the trance. They sat quietly, exploding only when the music stopped. The dancers earned three nines for their display.
