THE EDITOR, Sir:
The West Indies team is on a mission not yet accomplished. Chances are they may not accomplish such.
Inspite of ifs and buts they are the regional team and I am behind them 100 per cent. We have been playing good in patches and don't be alarmed if we finally get it right. Captain Brian Charles Lara and his charge might just stun the world.
For the time being, let us keep our fingers crossed and anticipate victory after victory. The ball is in our court so we have got to capitalise on it in our backyard.
The pundits have us as the underdogs so let us bark loud and frighten them away. The climate is in our favour so home-grown boys will have the advantage. We are the thrill seeker, and we yearn for another memorable moment in the lives of the Caribbean people.
We have some reasonably good bowlers and a host of accomplished batsmen. So what are we waiting for to take the trophy from the Aussies? We have a remarkable track record in the World Cup competition. We won the inaugural world cup in 1975 and won the competition the next time around in 1979. In 1983 we were a finalist but were brushed apart by a spirited Indian team.
A host country has never won the World Cup but we are fully committed to breaking this jinx. We have the necessary ammunition to do such, so let's go with it.
I am, etc.,
Paris Taylor (Mr)
Greater Portmore
