MALVERN, ST. ELIZABETH:
Most Jamaican parents who have young infants are never satisfied with their upbringing unless they are taken to a church to be dedicated to God or be christened.
Such was the case with Conchetta Peart who took her little daughter Damille Wright to the Sharon Baptist Church in Santa Cruz on March 2 for the act to be performed by the Reverend Jacob Powell.
Having had little Damille christened, Conchetta, who spoke with Life and Times, said she was relieved that the baby girl was dedicated to God. She said she was aware that children were born in sin, but that they should never be allowed to grow up in sin, hence taking them to church to be dedicated.
"It is very important to take them to be dedicated because of Jesus Christ who loves all of us. The child was born in sin so I said that she must be blessed by God, because she should not grow up in sin and die in sin," said Conchetta.
She said now that Damille, who is also the daughter of Greg Wright is christened, she knows that she is covered by the blood of Jesus. She noted that unless God's protection is upon all children, parents should never be comfortable, as they need the presence of God around them all the time.
As a follow-up and as a way of ensuring that Damille knows the way of the Lord, Conchetta said she intends to ensure that her daughter is taken to church so that she gets the teachings that can lead her to accepting Christ from early.
The mother added that although she is not a born-again Christian, she wants her infant to know and practise Christian principles. The Church, she believes, is a good place to have an influence on her daughter's life and that all parents should seek to have their young ones not only sent to church but to be taken by their parents.
She also promised that she as an unsaved mother was willing to start following Jesus and that she intended to do so as soon as possible. Unlike some parents who only take their babies to church to be christened, because of fear, Conchetta said that such was not the case with her, as she believed that from an infant is born, Christ's blessings should be on him/her.
"I did not take her to be dedicated because of fear. I think it is the right thing to do," said Peart who hails from Park near Santa Cruz in St. Elizabeth.
Little Damille Wright was born on December 18, 2006, at the Black River Hospital.
