Rabalac marches on

Jonique Gaynor, Staff Reporter

Calabar High yesterday became the first team to make it to this year's finals of TVJ's Schools' Challenge Quiz. They crushed St.Jago's dreams of making it to the finals in a competitive match.

Both teams played well during the first segment and it was during the third section that Calabar managed to distinguish themselves from their competitors. Although St. Jago had a string of consecutive wrong answers during the first segment, they managed to catch up with Calabar before the section ended. At the sound of the bell, St.Jago was on eight, while Calabar had nine points.

The performances in the second section, were not very impressive. Calabar's best minute was their first, when they scored nine points.

They however only managed to score a total of seven in the other two minutes. St.Jago was also not at their best and only scored a total of 10 points in this round. The scores at the end of this section were Calabar on 25 and St.Jago on 19.

The third section of the match proved to be the best for Calabar. They secured their victory in this section and there was little St.Jago could do about it. At match end, Calabar was on 40, while St.Jago was on 21.

Calabar's captain, Troy Stone, told THE STAR, "We didn't play as good as we wanted. We gave away some points. The match showed us that we need to strengthen some areas. We need to plug some loose holes and make preparations better for the final match."

St. Jago's captain, Greig Drummond, was humble in defeat. He said, "The scores could have been better, but the long and short is Calabar is a good team and they deserve the victory."

The Calabar team : Demar Barnett, Rexandrew Wright, Troy Stone (Capt.), Aldion Lee.

The St.Jago team : Greig Drummond (Capt.), Seiyefa Sonron, Jermaine Lewis, Andre Brown.

Quarter-Final Report

After a heated and competitive quarter-final round, four teams were left to vie for a spot in the semi-finals of TVJ's Schools' Challenge Quiz.

In the first quarter-final, Calabar easily defeated Clarendon College, 67 - 19. St.Jago High also registered a strong victory over St.Mary High School, 31 to 7. In the other quarter-finals, Kingston College managed to stave off strong competition from Wolmer's Boys to emerge victors with a score of 33 to 25, and Ardenne High secured the final spot in the semi- finals when they defeated Manchester High, 46 to 22.
