First Hill All-Age to get 'Chris' concert

Christopher Martin - file

The STAR Artiste of the Month of January, Chris Martin, offered, along with other artistes, a free concert in aid of raising funds for a needy school. We got many entries, but eventually, it was the one from Calvin Thomas of First Hill All-Age school in Jackson Town, Trelawny which won.

Courts Jamaica Limited has so far donated one computer to the school. The STAR will present this computer at the concert to be held at the school on Tuesday, April 3. If you would like to make a donation to the school, contact The STAR at 932-6069 or 932-6251.

The letter follows:

First Hill All-Age School

Jackson Town P.O.

Trelawny

Dear Editor,

I believe that my school deserves to win the Chris Martin 'One-of-a-kind' penny concert. The funds raised will help in improving he school's facilities. The public address system and all of our computers and printers were stolen by thieves. They were important to us. We got valuable information from them. We were happy for computer classes because most of us do not have one at home. This was our only means of using a computer. Our teachers would type our tests using them, then have them printed, now they have to write them on the chalkboard.

Our furniture is short and needs repairing, some students don't have a comfortable seat. My teacher's desk is held up with a building block. The school also needs painting and fencing. Outsiders stroll on the compound sometimes interfering with the students and teachers. Animals and thieves reap the crops from our school farm. This discourages us.

Our bathrooms are pit latrines. Some students are afraid of using them. Our multi-purpose court is unfinished.

If my school wins then we would be able to address the need which is greatest. I know that the students will be very grateful.

I am, etc.,

Calvin Thomas
