A man accused of stealing $112,000 from the Asylum Nightclub appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
Raymond Ramsey, who was reportedly employed as an assistant manager of the club, pleaded guilty to larceny as a servant when he appeared before Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey.
According to court documents, Ramsey's job as assistant manager meant that he dealt with the delivery of stock, the checking off of bartenders and the issuing of floats on a nightly basis. On March 14, the club's manager went to the office to check off the previous night's bills and to make appropriate recordings.
Money in the 'float'
He reportedly noticed two control sheets, signed by two bartenders and co-signed by the accused. The sheets had figures amounting to $60,1010 and $72,500. Ramsey's signature on these documents usually suggests that he received the money and that it was checked in the presence of the bartenders.
After checking the money, the manager reportedly discovered that $112,000 was missing. Ramsey later turned up for work, and when he was asked about the missing money, he reportedly said it was in the float. The police were called.
While being questioned by the police, Ramsey reportedly told them that his nephew had suffered a broken leg and needed to undergo surgery to have it fixed.
When he appeared in court, Ramsey said that he had put the money in the float so it could be used to make change. He later told the court that he had lost the money. RM Pusey, however, was not convinced and asked, "What kind of float has in $112,000?"
Ramsey indicated to the court that he wanted to repay the money. He was granted bail in the sum of $50,000 with surety. He was ordered to surrender his travel documents and a stop order was made. He is to return on April 10 with the money. He will be sentenced then.
