Sports & unity

The way the cricket fever has swept Jamaica is definitely proof that sports is often a vehicle that unites the nation.

The thousands who pur-chased their tickets and went to see the matches and lend support to the West Indies have certainly brought about a level of joy and happiness among Jamaicans that we have not seen in a while.

Since the start of the tournament here, Jamaicans have proven that they can behave decently while putting on a show of a world-class standard. The beautiful performances at the opening ceremony that certainly made every Jamaican proud to be associated with the island only demonstrates that we have the potential to do more positive things.

The good behaviour of the spectators was also clear at both the opening ceremony and at the match at Sabina Park. This is proof that we can be decent, law abiding citizens if we try.

We hope that one of the benefits this tournament will bring to the island will be a sense of unity among Jamaicans and West Indies. It should be more than monetary but also an opportunity for the island to be peaceful once again.

As the tournament continues, we hope Jamaicans will continue to show their best face to the world so that people will want to visit our country and invest here. It is possible for us to behave well if we only try. So Jamaicans, let us be on our best behaviour from now on.
