Ardenne demolish Titchfield

Ardenne overranTitchfield 52-19 in yesterday's Television Jamaica's Schools' Challenge Quiz competition leaving no stone unturned as they picked up every point possible on their way to victory.

When Ardenne walked into TVJ's studios looking very military as the team filed into position, it seemed they had already won the match.

The first win was Titchfield's, however, as they won the toss and sent in Ardenne first. At the end of the first section, Ardenne was on six with Titchfield right behind them with five points. But after a query about VRML, Virtual Reality Modelling Language, to which Ardenne responded Virtual Reality Mark-up Language, the judges accepted the latter and their score rose to seven.

The second section was the best for Ardenne where they gained 25 points. Two of these came after the judges deliberated for more than 15 minutes, awarding the team extra points for pronouncing y-a-c-h-t which they pronounced yaacht versus yacht, and their Spanish to English translation "without feeling" for senseless. Titchfield's query resulted in them losing and gaining a point, remaining at 19 for this section.

But Ardenne was not done and showed their true excellence in the buzzer section getting 11 of their 12 responses correctly. However, it was after yet another query that the judges realised that the French to English translation was off. Instead of "to clean windows", the team said "to clean window". Titchfield buzzed four times with a correct response on two occasions, retaining their 19 points.

"The match was well contested," said the Rev. Glen Archer, veteran coach of Ardenne. "We take no opponent lightly. We prepared specifically for the match and particularly in strategy. He commended his team which he referred to as "some serious youngsters who are committed to excellence under God".

Meanwhile, Devon Farr of Titchfield congratulated both teams for a job well done. "We put up a good fight as well as Ardenne who (also) put up a very good fight," Farr said. "They [Ardenne] were quicker on the buzzer. We had expected to knock them there, but we came out guns blazing and went down guns blazing. [Also] the amount of queries that were made sort of threw out the students, (and) got them stirred up."
