Waterhouse fought their way from a goal down to secure an early first-leg advantage with a 2-1 win over Seba United at the Waterhouse Mini Stadium as the Red Stripe Champions Cup second round kicked off with five games islandwide yesterday.

Scion McNiesh pushed the home team on the back foot with his 14th minute strike, but Waterhouse would pull level by half-time. Robert Robinson was able to poke his follow-up attempt into the back of the net after his initial header was repelled by Seba custodian Alrick Henry. While the first half had been a fairly even outing, Waterhouse dominated the second half of play and created several chances.

The Drewsland team would reap the reward of their industry in the 71st minute when Robinson ran on to a through ball, outsprinted the Seba back line and slotted past a stranded Henry in goal.

In other games, August Town cooled off red-hot Reno when they registered a 1-0 victory over the Westmoreland team at the UWI Bowl. David Laylor netted the all-important goal in the 77th minute, which not only saw August Town snatch the early advantage but beat Reno for the first time this season.

Quick brace

Portmore United registered the day's biggest margin of victory at the Ferdie Neita Park when they blasted KSAFA Super League team Duhaney Park 5-0. Dwayne Ford pushed the home team into the lead in the eighth minute before a quick brace by striker Anthony Bennett in the 24th and 33rd minutes put the game beyond doubt. Carlington Smith added another for the St. Catherine team in the 66th minute and Oneil McDonald closed out the scoring with his 82nd-minute strike.

Premier league representative Village United showed their class when they coasted by Star Cosmos 2-0 at the Elliston Wakeland Centre. Luke Tate opened the scoring for the Trelawny team in the 24th minute before Leon Irving put the issue beyond doubt with a goal on the stroke of full time.

At Montpelier field, a struggling Wadadah survived an early scare to come away 2-1 victors over home team Montpelier. Triston Gardener netted in the second minute to put Montpelier ahead, but Sion Thorpe netted in the 40th minute and Markino Gillings handed the premier league team the victory with his 78th minute strike.
