Black River High yesterday performed an unexpected feat by defeating Munro College to advance to the third round of TVJ Schools' Challenge Quiz.
Black River High defeated Munro 24-16, using a careful and calculated approach to the match. Munro College attributed their loss to the lack of preparation for the match. "I am disappointed, of course. I don't think we were really prepared for the match. We just put in this weekend and we didn't get a lot of time because the boys had exams," Howard Thompson, coach of Munro, told THE STAR.
He was, however, quick to point out that they had played Black River in several practice matches and although they lost, they knew they were defeated by a good team. He also said they will begin preparations for next year earlier, and will be working harder to go further in the competition next time.
Tamor Blake, coach of Black River, described the match as a good one and a welcome win. "Coming into the match we know that we are evenly-matched because we practised with them. We knew they would have been faster in the buzzer section and that was the part that we were worried about," she said.
But Munro hardly buzzed at all in the section, and thus were unable to surpass the lead that Black River had established after the minutes section. The first section of the match got off to a competitive start with both teams ending on six points.
In section two of the match, the scores continued to remain close with Munro moving up to nine points after the first minute and Black River moving up to ten points. The other two one-minute segments were equally com-petitive and by the end of the section, Black River was on 20 points while Munro was close behind on 16 points.
The buzzer segment of the match did not see much activity for both sides. Munro attempted four questions, two of which they got correct and two incorrect. This left them with a final score of 16 points.
Black River only answered two questions, which added four more points to their tally, to bring their final score to 24 points.
