The Red Brigade of Boys' Town ended the Wray and Nephew National Premier League second round on a high note when they marched past rivals Arnett Gardens 1-0 at the Tony Spaulding Sports Complex in one of two rescheduled games yesterday.

In the day's other game, August Town snatched an important win, moving further away from the relegation zone when they nipped Wadadah 2-0 at Catherine Hall. Daniel Shaw opened the scoring for August Town with a 28th-minute strike and Ross Burton secured all three points in the 87th minute.

The third time was the charm for Boys' Town, having hit the back of the net on two previous occasions, only to see both goals disallowed. But Marvin Morgan finally registered one that counted on the score sheet in the 74th minute.

Poor clearance

Denzil Watson cut inside of his defender to blast to goal, but Arnett keeper Julian McLeish was up to the task and parried away the effort. A poor clearance, however, fell to Morgan who quickly fired to goal, this time the follow-up attempt, aided by a deflection, flew over the head of a sprawling McLeish and high into the roof of the net.

Boys' Town celebrated wildly, having seen a free kick from Michael Campbell, which seemed to beat everyone and find its way untouched into the back of the net, disallowed for what the referee deemed to be a hand ball just 10 minutes earlier.

"We definitely needed this victory. It was a long time coming," said Boys' Town coach Andrew Price.

"Over the last six weeks, we've been playing some good football and we are really coming into our own," he went on.

"We have had a lot of players injured for the season, now they're coming back and we will get better when the season progresses," Price added.

Played with effort

However, home team Arnett Gardens did have a few opportunities to pull level, the best of those fell to front man Kevin Wilson. In the 84th minute, Wilson found himself alone at the back post, but seemed to misjudge the flight of the ball on a Marcelino Blackburn cross as he scuffed the attempt wide of goal. In a similar position five minutes later, Wilson also failed to convert once again.

"We lost today but I think we played with a lot of effort and urgency," said Arnett Gardens coach Glendon Bailey.

"We got our chances and did not put them away, that's always a problem. But apart from that, we applied ourselves well," he added.

Boys' Town ended the round on 27 points in seventh place, two ahead of Village United who still have one game left against Arnett Gardens. Arnett are sixth on 30 points.
