It was showdown between two boys schools in the first match of the second round of the TVJ Schools' Challenge Quiz yesterday.

When the smoke cleared, defending champions Calabar High advanced to the third round to continue their quest of defending their title. Jamaica College (JC) who put up a strong fight for the spot lost out when they failed to maintain their aggression throughout the match.

From section one of the match, Calabar started to build its points, scoring 10 to JC's 8. After a point adjustment, Calabar moved up to 12 points and JC moved up to nine.

Section two of the match was to be more intense. By the end of the first minute, both teams were neck and neck at 19 points. In the second minute however Calabar started to move ahead moving up to 26 points, while JC was close behind on 22 points.

Calabar was still uncomfortable with JC's close score and in the third minute scored a whopping 15 points to increase their points to 41. JC remained in contention ending the section with 30 points.

The buzzer section was extremely one-sided with Calabar dominating the section. JC seemed to have lost their confidence once Calabar started buzzing and made only three attempts in the section.

When the round ended Calabar scored a whopping 65 points, while JC had only scored 32 points.

Euan Walters, coach of the JC team admitted that his team could have won if they had followed through with the game plan. "Well, I really don't believe the scores reflect the quality of our team. The buzzer section was where we lost the match. We weren't adequately prepared for the buzzer," he said.

He added that Calabar had dominated the section and commended them for the manner in which they played. He said they will be plugging information gaps and working on playing better in the buzzer section as they prepare for next year.

Aldion Lee, captain of the Calabar team was thankful for the win, and noted that there was room for improvement.

Members of the Calabar team are Aldion Lee (captain), Troy Stone, Roxandrew Wright and Demar Barnett.

Members of the JC team are Ainsley Pagan (captain), Robert Moore, Ricardo Brown and Joseph Dyke.

Next match Queen's School versus St. Mary's College.
