Teams hunt end-of-round

Arnett Gardens' Shane Edwards … injured in bus accident - file

Portmore United, Reno and Waterhouse all have a chance to secure a place in the second end-of-round final beside Harbour View in today's round of matches in the Wray and Nephew National Premier League.

Waterhouse play Boys' Town at Drewsland and Portmore host Reno at Ferdie Neita Park in their final game of the second round. However, Reno who are tied for second with Waterhouse on 40 points, have a game in hand against Boys' Town which will be played sometime this week.

Harbour View lead the league with 46 points and play Tivoli Gardens tonight while Portmore are a close fourth with 39 points. If they are to qualify for the end-of-round final, Portmore must beat Reno today and hope Boys' Town beat Waterhouse and Reno.

In yesterday's game, Naggo Head won their second straight match with a 1-0 clincher against Wadadah. Veteran Layton Barrett produced the vital goal in the 89th minute. Coach Wayne Fairclough was overjoyed with the win and credited it to the spirit in the team for the past three to four weeks.

"This is a good result which is down to the spirit that we have developed. Today, we played in spurts but captain Layton Barrett produced the goods today," Fairclough said.

Naggo Head's two-win streak is impressive as it is their only maximum points from 21 games this season. Last week, they edged Village United by a similar margin at Ferdie Neita Park.

The other game that was scheduled for yesterday, Village United versus Arnett Gardens at Elliston Wakeland Centre, was called off after Arnett's team bus met in an accident yesterday morning on the Spanish Town bypass as they travelled to the game. Striker Shane Edwards and defender Wayne Ellis received injuries to their feet, while the three passengers in the car which collided with the bus were hospitalised in serious condition.

"The bus almost overturn and couple of the ballers get 'jerk up', but it could be worse. We just have to give God thanks," said Arnett coach Glendon Bailey.
