CEASEFIRE! - Spanish Town gangs make peace again

By: Fabian Ledgister, Staff Reporter

Peace is once again reigning in Spanish Town, St. Catherine, due to an understanding between senior members of both One Order and Clansman to promote entertainment and togetherness in the Old Capital.

The STAR team visited the normally troubled community of Tawes Pen about 3:00 a.m. two Sundays ago, and the area was surprisingly abuzz with activity. Not only were the local One Order gang members present, but also former opposing members of the Clansman gang. All seemed oblivious that they were in warfare not too long ago, as they drank liquor, enjoyed 'crazy Saturday's adult entertainment, and instead of the gun, they simply had fun.

"Right now a peace and moneymaking we a seh ... crazy Saturdays a gwa'an big, artiste a come tru, an all Clans deh yah a support it," said a high-ranking member of the One Order gang.

Although they chose a specific corner in the abandoned building where 'crazy Saturday's is held weekly, Clansman members confirmed the unison between the two Spanish Town gangs.

"A jus money an gal wi a deal wit now, wi na nuh time fi follow up di fry ... dem (One Order) a forward di Tika Friday, an a sen dem gal fi support wi ting, suh wi a forward fi dem ting, an a carry fi wi hot gal fi hype up dem ting," smiled a Clansman member, pointing at some curvaceous and scantily clad girls.

The 'Tika Friday' dance is held weekly in the bus park area (Clansman stronghold). One Order members confirmed they are also attending and supporting the 'Clansman event'.

Head of crime for the division, Deputy Superintendent, Meveral Smith, confirms that gang offensives against each other has reduced significantly this year. He says, however, that the peace has nothing to do with these events.

"Dance can't make a criminal different ... too much of them have gone to prison, and they are fully aware that if they confront the police, they will be hurt. As a result, the two gangs have become more reasonable in their approach toward one another," said DSP Smith.

Regardless, if the peace should be accredited to police or entertainment events, the refreshing sight of raw, unbridled fun in areas that were once cramped with fear, and economically stifled, is welcomed with open arms.
