Man in $1m jam gets bail

A man accused of collecting over $1million from two persons under the guise that he could provide them with motor vehicles, was granted bail when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Gary Brown, a 31-year-old labourer of a Denham Town address, is investing the money he took from the complainant in stocks and bonds.

The allegations against him are that in December 2005, he called the two complainants and told them that he had a contact at the wharf that could get him crashed vehicles at a cheap cost. In January 2006, the accused reportedly took the complainants to the wharf where they pointed out the vehicles they wanted.

The complainants were reportedly told to pay processing fees of $20,000 for motor cars and $40,000 for SUVs. Brown allegedly collected $100,000 in processing fee from both complainants. Between January 4 to 13 2006, it is alleged that Brown collected $1,640,000 from the complainants. He subsequently failed to deliver the vehicles or to return the money and a report was made.

When Brown appeared before RM Judith Pusey, he told the court that it was a "miscommunication" that led to his arrest. He also added that the complainants knew he had the ability to repay them. He pleaded 'guilty with explanation'.

Brown is to return to court on February 26 when the matter will be tried. He was given bail in the sum of $1 million with one or two sureties.
