Beware the voodoo witch doctors

THE EDITOR, Sir:

An article by Tashieka Mair in the STAR issue dated Saturday, January 20, stated that two Haitian nationals who entered the country illegally have been given the opportunity to apply for political asylum.

They pleaded that beyond impregnating Jamaican women there was no opportunities for them in Haiti. Automatically, I assumed that it was a case where the impoverished Haiti was devoid of technology and other needs such as education. But I found out at the end of the article that they are merely reasons.

I say merely because they are so many unemployed masons here in our gracious island. We must not be overly gracious to Haitians as a whole, because previous editions of your paper have depicted snake charmers practising voodoo.

RM Henry's reaction that "you guys seek opportunities here, when so much of our own are heading for US/Europe" is an indication to me that she might have been flattered.

The fact is that with the influx of Haitians, it is likely that there will be an increase in the practice of voodoo. Voodoo, as you may know, involves dolls, probably snakes and skulls - human skulls that is.

I am, etc.,

WAYNE HOWELL

St. Catherine.
