Knockalva Technical high broke a five-year spell yesterday when they advanced to the second round of TVJ Schools' Challenge Quiz by defeating Brimmervale High.
Jeffroy Baker, captain of the Knockalva team said he was happy that they won as they prepared for over a year for this year's competition. "It's not our best , but it is our first victory in five years," he said.
The match saw Knockalva stepping out from the first round and following through to win the match 22- 6.
In section one of the match, Knockalva scored six points while Brimmervale High scored only two points after the round.
The minutes section followed the same trend. In minute one, Knockalva gained four points while Brimmervale gained none. The second minute continued to see Knockalva increasing by gaining four points while Brimmervale gained only a point.
In the final minute, Knockalva moved up by six points to end the section on 16 points, while Brimmervale continued to lag behind, gaining another point to end with four points.
Knockalva was clearly set to win the match and that they did by buzzing in only three times to gain six points to move their score to 22 points. Brimmervale only answered one question and moved their score to six points.
Baker, who told THE STAR that he was a good sportsman, helped his school get ahead on key sports questions getting all of the ones posed to his school correct.
He said the team would certainly be studying harder and working on their French and bible knowledge as they prepared for their next match.
Mark Moncrieffe, coach of the Brimmervale team said he was disappointed. He said nervousness was what caused his team to perform poorly. "I am really upset. I think they could have performed better. we missed some easy questions," he said.
He said for next year they will study harder and he will be trying to find a way to help them get over their nervousness.
Members of the Brimmervale High team are Peta-Gaye Stewart (captain), Sheneika Grant , Morris Patterson and Davian Lewis.
Members of the Knockalva team are Jeffroy Baker (captain), Shanique McNiel, Chevon Campbell and Chris-Ann Wilson.
