An 18-year-old man who was shot and killed by the police on Sunday after he allegedly pointed a Taurus revolver at a police party has now been identified. He is Germain Brown, of McCooks Pen, St Catherine.
According to the Spanish Town Police, about 2:50 p.m. on Sunday, a Police party conducting spot checks along St John's Road, stopped a vehicle in which Brown was travelling. He allegedly alighted and pointed a gun at the lawmen. He was shot, and died shortly after.
The Police said that a closer examination of the weapon revealed that it was a standard issue to the Haitian Police Force as it was engraved 'Police National de Haiti.'
"We have checked and found that this gun is used by the Haitian Police Force. We believe that it is part of the drugs-for- guns trade, so it is a major step in an ongoing investigation." said Detective Sergeant Paul Thomas.
THE STAR learnt that four guns have been seized by the Police in St Catherine north since the start of the year. However, the seizure of the gun from Brown's body is the first direct link to Haiti. Last year, the police recovered 69 guns.
