T&T trounce the Windward Islands

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):

TRINIDAD AND Tobago recorded their second successive win of the Carib Beer Series when they predictably completed a comprehensive innings and 86-run win against Windward Islands at Guaracara Park yesterday.

Starting the third day at 49 for two and needing a miracle to save the game, Windward Islands were dismissed for 237, 20 minutes before the tea interval.

The visitors got half-centuries from Miles Bascombe (53) and Deighton Butler (54) but they were not enough to help the Windwards push the game into the fourth and final day today.

Fast bowler Ravi Rampaul was the leading bowler with three for 39 while left-arm spinner Dave Mohammed claimed three for 55. Pacer Richard Kelly supported with two for 53 with off-spinner Amit Jaggernauth finishing with two for 70.

Capitalised on opportunity

"Our batsmen set the tone on the opening day, with the batting of young (Adrian) Barath who was scoring his second straight hundred at this level," T&T captain Daren Ganga said afterward. "Our bowlers capitalised on this opportunity, with Jaggernauth leading the way in the first innings, with good support from (Dave) Mohammed, Richard Kelly, Ravi Rampaul, even Sherwin (Ganga). All played their part perfectly and the plan was well executed."

T&T's victory could have been achieved much earlier but the hosts were thwarted by several dropped catches and a stubborn ninth-wicket partnership of 80 between Butler and Dennis George, who finished unbeaten on 34.

T&T first innings 477-9 dec.
