Leaders Barbados wasted little time in completing an emphatic victory over Jamaica by an innings and 31 runs early on the third day of their fourth round top-of-the-table Carib Beer Series match at Chedwin Park yesterday.
Barbados' third win of the season, attained an hour into the penultimate day, lifted them to 42 points and maintained their position at the top of the table ahead of the final round of matches.
Jamaica, resuming their second innings on 81 for five and trailing by 85, offered little resistance against fast bowlers Pedro Collins and Corey Collymore and were dismissed for 135 in spite of some lower-order hitting from the tail.
Left-armer Collins, who took three of the last five wickets, finished with four for 38, while right-arm seamer Collymore captured four for 42 to complete a 10-wicket game haul that earned him the Man-of-the-Match award.
Defeat avenged
Captain Ryan Hinds praised his team for the performance that avenged a big defeat to Jamaica at the same venue two years ago.
"It was a fantastic performance. I'm elated. It was bit of Jamaica's own medicine," Hinds said.
"From the time we came here to Chedwin Park, we wanted to do the same thing they did to us the last time. It was a total team effort. We batted and bowled well as a team."
The defeat for Jamaica kept them on 21 points and after failing to score 150 in both innings, captain Wavell Hinds put the blame on his batsmen.
"We batted poorly. We did not apply ourselves. Being 87 for one half-hour after lunch on the first day and ending up at 132 was a poor effort by the batters," Hinds said.
"We have seven recognised batters. We've asked for most of the batting to be done by those guys. Trying to post a score in excess of 300 would have called for a big century and same fairly good contribution from the batters."
Barbados struck a blow with the last ball of the second over when left-hander Jamie Trenchfield was lbw to Collins as he played across the line.
The slide continued with the final ball of the following over when Dave Bernard edged an attempted drive to second slip off Collymore.
The three tail-enders, Odean Brown, Andrew Richardson and Jermaine Lawson enjoyed themselves in smashing two boundaries each, but their stay was short-lived and each fell for 10.
Brown provided Collins with his third wicket of the innings after missing a big swing and was bowled.
Richardson also essayed a cross-batted shot against Collins to go by the lbw route and Barbados finished off the match when Lawson gave a catch to mid-on off Collymore.
Barbados, who only need to avoid defeat in their final match to win the Cup, meet Guyana at Bourda in the last round starting next Monday, while Jamaica, whose only chance of reaching the Challenge final is a victory in their last encounter, are up against Trinidad and Tobago at Alpart.
