Last year's finalists, Kingston College (KC), secured their place in round two of TVJ's Schools' Challenge Quiz after an effortless win over newcomers Bellefield High.
From the outset of the match, it was clear that KC had a clear advantage. Being a more seasoned team, they were able to handle the questions better than their opponents. Bellefield, on the other hand, was obviously struggling to secure some points and at the end of the section, they gained a mere three. KC, however, had 11 points.
Section two proved to be even more disappointing for Bellefield. Though it was obvious that they were trying, their efforts were not enough to even get them near to KC. In the first of their three minutes, Bellefield only managed to secure four points, while KC racked up an impressive 12.
In the other two minutes, Bellefield got a total of four points and KC gained 20. At the end of this segment, KC were way in front on 43 while Bellefield stood on 12.
The third section was completely dominated by KC while Bellefield's buzzers went silent. The team sat quietly for the entire section, while their determined opponents buzzed a total of 15 times.
Brave stand
Of the 15 questions they attempted, only two were incorrect. At the end of the match, KC stood on 57 points, after losing four for answering before being identified, while Bellefield had 12.
Noreen Thompson, coach of the Bellefield High School team, though disappointed with the team's efforts, commended the students for their brave stand against KC.
"We were here for the first time, and seeing that we were a bit late for practice, they gave a good account of themselves," she said. "We started training in December."
KC's captain, Dusean Harriott, told THE STAR, "We're kinda disappointed that we didn't go more, but we thank God for what we got and we're going to do better next time."
