MAKYN THE NEWS

Jonkunnu bands remain a wonderful Christmas tradition, a gift from our fore-fathers.

They are popular in many towns across the island and feature colourful performers dressed in a mix of African and European costumes.

They are now only seen at special entertainment events such as that recently staged by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission's (JCDC) Children's Jonkunnu Competition.

And while I can say that we need to see more examples of our rich heritage, how much do we value our beautiful and diverse culture?

Many young people have not grasped the importance of preserving and celebrating what it means to be Jamaican.

Moreso, they do not see that we all can learn by applying history's positive lessons to our daily lives.

We need to constantly revisit the past; celebrate history's wonderful gifts and move forward by learning to appreciate what it means to be Jamaican.
