The Queens reign over Excelsior

The Queen's School and Excelsior High were happy with their performance in TVJ Schools' Challenge Quiz on Saturday.

Although Excelsior lost the match, they noted that their preparation was only done over three months and their performance was good for a fairly new team. They were, however, optimistic about next year, because the school will be introducing a sixth form. They, therefore, would have additional student resources to help prepare the team.

The Queen's School team members were equally happy, describing their victory as a dream come true. "It's wonderful. It was a rough year. We never had any support. We did it on our own with the support of our coaches," Davida Dixon, captain of the team said.

The teams got a strong start in the match as both of them ended the first section on nine points. Section two of the match saw Queen's widening the distance between themselves and Excelsior by six points and ending with 15 points. Excelsior was close behind with 13 points.

Minute two saw Queen's increasing its score and moving to 23 points while Excelsior stayed close with 18 points. The Queen's school finished up the section with 30 points after the third minute, while Excelsior only managed to score three more points to end the section with 21 points.

In section three of the match, Queen's School buzzed themselves to victory, getting most of the questions they attempted correct. Excelsior, however, was no match for them in the buzzer section and attempted only six questions, two of which they got wrong.

When the buzzing ended, The Queen's School had 48 points compared to Excelsior's 25 points.

The Queen's team said they will be working on improving themselves in the buzzer section as they prepare for their next match in the competition. The team members noted that they need to be even faster in that segment. They also said they wanted to dedicate the match to one of their schoolmates, Kathy-Ann Barrett, who died recently.

Despite the trials, the team members said they believe they can go all the way if they put their trust in God and worked hard to do well.

Members of the Queen's School Team are: Tamika Wright, Saabeerah Abdullah, Felicia Francis and Davida Davis.

The members of the Excelsior team are: Naraine Anderson (captain), Christopher Thomas, Hartley Pearson and Donald Burrell.

Next Match: Today Iona High will face St. Mary's College.
