Former American sprint stars Lee Evans, Mel Pender and John Carlos will be special guests at tomorrow's third annual Douglas Forrest Invitational Meet at the Stadium East complex starting at 9:00 a.m.
Evans was just past his 21st birthday when he shattered the world record in the 400m at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Evans clocked 43.8 and his compatriot Larry James, 43.9, to register the first sub-44 seconds ever in the 400m. The two then went on to run important legs on the 4x400m team which also set a world record (2:56.1).
John Carlos was third in the 200m at the same Olympics while Pender ran on the sprint relay team which mined gold in world record time (38.2). Carlos is also famous for the Black Power salute he gave along with winner Tommie Smith at the medal ceremony for the 200m in Mexico City.
Several of the island's top schools, defending high school champions Kingston College (KC), Jamaica College (JC), Wolmer's Boys, Calabar, Camperdown, and St. Jago head the boys' teams. St. Jago, Queen's, Immaculate, Wolmer's Girls, St. Andrew High, and Alpha are expected to be the leading girls' teams at the meet. Two teams from the Bahamas and Grand Cayman will also compete.
Six new events, the 5000m for boys and 3000m for girls, along with the 4x800m relay, the 70m and 80m hurdles for Classes Four and Three girls respectively and the 200m for Special Olympic male and female have been added to this year's meet.
