Men on murder charge get bail

By Tashieka Mair, Star Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:

One of two elderly St. James men, who has been accused of beating a man to death for breaking into his house, was granted bail in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Roland Collins, 57, charged as an accessory after the fact, was granted bail in the sum of $150,000 with the condition that he reports to the Montego Freeport Police Station on Mondays.

His co-accused Carlton McNaughton, who is answering murder charges, was remanded in custody and is scheduled to return to court on January 13.

His lawyer, Winston Douglas, said based on the evidence on file he would not be making a bail application.

However, Collins' attorney, George Duncan, said that there was nothing on file, which speaks to his client taking part in the murder of the man only known as 'Dave', except for the fact that he was the caretaker of the property where the offence took place.

Allegations are that the police, acting on information, went to a football field at Brandon Hill where they found 'Dave's' body. It is said that McNaughton and another man beat the man before tying him to tree. Further allegations are that Collins later assisted McNaughton to move the body to the playing field.
