A security guard attached to a company located along Red Hills Road, was robbed of more than five million dollars on Tuesday.
Reports are that at about 9:50 a.m., the armed security guard was walking towards the RBTT branch in Tropical Plaza, St. Andrew, to make a lodgement when he was surprised by a lone gunman who robbed him of a bag containing $5,430,000 in cash.
The robber then made a successful getaway on an awaiting red motorcycle along Constant Spring Road.
Set up
But police investigating the
matter are contemplating that the incident may have been set up 'internally' from someone involved in the business, as they say intelligence suggests that the robbers were 'tipped off' about the hefty deposit.
"Eyewitnesses said the men were there loitering from early in the morning, and that as soon as the security guard came, the robber sprang into action," said an officer attached to the investigations.
The police say they have not yet determined if the money was insured, but that the 'nonchalant' attitude of the business owners regarding the missing millions may indicate that it was insured.
In the meantime, the police are warning businesses that are planning to conduct major lodgements to contract the services of a security company instead of placing their own employees' lives at risk. In addition, they are appealing for public assistance in this robbery.
"Anyone who may have seen anything that can assist us are asked to contact the Half-Way Tree CIB at 926-2551, or 119," said an officer at the station.
