Jamaican jockey Jermaine Bridgmohan scored another triple success Monday to move further ahead in his competitive battle for the Tropical at Calder jockeys' title.
The 18-year-old Bridgmohan landed the first, fifth and sixth races to complete a remarkable six wins in two race days, edging two wins ahead, Manoel Cruz in the championship race with less than three weeks left in the season.
Bridgmohan, who also scored three victories on Sunday, boosted his tally of wins to 67, while Cruz is up 65 after landing doubles on Sunday and Monday.
On Monday, Bridgmohan steered the even-money favourite Nancy Casey to victory by 1-1/4 lengths in the US$8,500 first race over seven furlongs in 1:28.47 seconds.
Bridgmohan secured his second win with another favourite Bankin Cash (2-1) in the US$11,500 fifth race, scoring by 3-1/2 lengths over 5-1/2 furlongs, and he completed his three-timer with the 26-1 outsider Factual Contender in the US$24,500 sixth race over 1-1/8th miles.
Teenaged riding sensation
Factual Contender surged to the front in the eight-horse field leaving the backstretch and drew clear to win by 5-1/2 lengths in 1:47.08.
The teenage riding sensation had kicked off Sunday's triple with an easy 6-3/4 length win aboard the 2-1 second favourite Straight Blade in the US$7,500 fourth race over a mile and 70 yards in 1:47.78.
He then won the US$7,500 sixth race - also over a mile and 70 yards - with Majestic Mountain (7-2) by 2-1/2 lengths in 1:49.23, and the 2-1 favourite Thanks Jimmy won the 6-1/2 furlong US$8,500 eighth race easily for him by 4-1/2 lengths in 1:19.94 seconds.
Jamaican trainer Ralph Ziadie also won on MondayÕs card, scoring with the 3-2 favourite Wildsummernights in the US$15,500 second race over a mile and sixteenth.
The Tropical at Calder meet ends on January 2.
