All-island netball finals in spotlight

The all-island finals of the ISSA/Digicel schoolgirls netball competition are on today at the Leila Robinson Courts.

After four months of intense competition involving more than 90 schools across the island, the competition has narrowed to four teams.

"We had a very competitive season, right down to the last rural and urban games and we are expecting very stiff competition in the all-island finals as well," Joan Walker, coordinator of the competition said in a release yesterday.

Denbigh High, who have been unbeaten all season, intend to maintain their streak today when they play Queen's High for the junior title.

"They are coming to give of their best, to showcase their talent," Denbigh's coach Annett Daley said.

Her plan for the match is simple, "We are going back to basic netball, catching, landing, passing and discipline in defence for all players, don't cause unnecessary obstructions or contacts, full force attack," she said. Denbigh secured 22-14 against Holmwood on Monday to win the rural junior league.

HARD WORK, GOOD NETBALL

Meanwhile, Marvette Anderson, coach of the urban finalists Queens, promised "hard work and some good netball". Her strategy for the game is to control the mid court.

"Possession is important, marking is important. We need to control the midcourt. If we can control midcourt, things should go well for us," she said.

In the senior league, Dunoon will face off against defending champions Holmwood Technical. Coach of the Manchester-based team Carline Graham-Powell said she was sure her team would retain the title.

"Holmwood are poised and ready, we are defending champions and we are going to do our best," she said.

But while Holmwood are set on retaining their title, Dunoon want to finish the job they have started.

"When we started this competition, I told the players we may not reach the second round. The team was that poor, but we worked hard, we worked relentlessly, nothing beats hard work," Dunoon's coach C.Lloyd Walker said after they beat St. Hugh's to become urban winners. Now poised to take the island title, Dunoon will not be holding back.

The junior game starts at 1.30 p.m. with the senior encounter set for 2.30.
