Stone Love hands out awards

Left: Wee Pow, owner of the legendary Stone Love, celebrates 34 years by handing out awards to friends in the music business.   Right: These lovely ladies stuck to the watch and rock treatment during the show.

It was Stone Love's 34th anniversary celebration at Mas Camp on Saturday night, but it was the sound system which handed out the awards. Most of them, anyway, as there was a special award from KC Jockey to Stone Love's owner, Winston 'Wee Pow' Powell.

There was also an award to Stampede for his street promotion excellence from KC Jockey, but otherwise it was Stone Love's Awards all the way, with most of the awardees not on hand to collect their trophies.

Best Male Dancer for 2006 went to Ding Dong, Matterhorn collecting on his behalf and handing over to the dancer later in the proceedings, Ding Dong saying "a our Grammy dis". But after Matterhorn had chanted to the girls to "fix up yusself, fix up yu place", Geefus asked him to remain on stage. "Right now Matterhorn, yu open de door fi selector chant pon mic," Geefus said, announcing him as Deejay of the Year and also the performer of the Song of the Year, Dutty Wine. "I'm overwhelmed. Tell dem no hate me. A no me. Me neva know," Matterhorn said. "Me feel good," he said, instructing the young woman holding the trophies to hoist them beside her breasts, her red shirt shorts rocking as he chanted "me tek yu leg an' fling dem pon me shoulda".

"Dats what yu call a hot sex," he said after.

Dancers of the year

Best New Male Dancer went to Colo Colo, who collected in person, the female version going to Bita who was on hand in a black cattish suit to collect. Mavado was not around to pick up his 'Best New Artiste' award, neither was Singer of the Year Da'Ville or Promoter of the Year Horseman.

A representative took the Stage Show of the Year award for West Kingston Jamboree, while Diamond stepped from behind the turntables to accept his Stone Love 'Employee of the Year' trophy.

Captain Barkey and Wickerman were humorous in taking their Best Legendary Duo Award, saying "the new name fe de girl wit' tree man, One Third, girls wit' one man, Brushy One String". CD 2000 took the Video Man of the Year trophy, with Sean Paul being named International Artiste of the Year.

Geefus did not name the 'Club of All Clubs', simply asking "whe it name?" and "Asylum" was the answer, Brian 'Ribi' Chung thanking Stone Love for representing reggae and Asylum, as well as dedicating the award to all the ladies who have supported the club for nine years.

'Best New Song' went to Buju Banton's 'Driver', with Stacy being named 'Dancehall Diva'.
