Junior TT team nabs 4 medals

The national junior table tennis team participating at the CRTTF Cadet Championships being held in Trinidad and Tobago enjoyed a significant haul of four medals on Saturday.

Jamaica won three gold medals in the Under-18 Boys, the Under-15 Boys and the Under-13 Girls categories. In the Under-13 category, the team of Shaunda Brash and Yvonne Foster ended undefeated and without losing a single match.

The Under-18 Girls 'A' team copped the silver medal, losing 3-0 to the strong Guyana team of Michelle John and T. Lowe. Lowe defeated Foster 7-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-4, 11-9 in a closely contested match, which saw Foster receiving standing ovations for some blistering forearm drives. Janelle Morris lost to Michelle John 4-11, 7-11, 8-11, while Morris and Foster lost the doubles 9-11, 6-11, 3-11.

The boys Under-18 'A' team of Emani McPherson, Michael Cai and Javaughn Johnson defeated Trinidad and Tobago 'B' in a thrilling five-setter. McPherson secured the first game defeating Sorzano 11-6, 9-11, 13-11, 7-11, 11-9. Cai then lost the second game to Abbott 14-11, 8-11, 5-11. Javaughn Johnson then brought Jamaica back in the game with a convincing 3-1 win over Baines 9-11, 11-6, 11-9, 14-12. After the exhausted Emani McPherson lost the fourth game to Abbott 8-11, 11-3, 12-14, 8-11, his first loss of the tournament, Michael Cai defied all odds in a nerve-wrecking fifth game of the final match, to defeat Sorzano of T&T 16-14, 14-12, 11-4 and secure a 3-2 win for Jamaica.

With spirits high, the Jamaica juniors have committed them-selves to earning a minimum of four more medals. Emani McPherson and Michael Cai have been seeded No. 1 in the Under-18 and Under-15 Boys' categories respectively, while Yvonne Foster has been seeded No. 2 in the Under-13 category, having lost a match to Trinidad's Under-13 representative, Kadeisha Abbott.
