The survival of the fittest theory proved true yesterday when Waulgrovians 'B' defeated Molynes 'B' 18-7, in the JNA/JNBS Open League competition at the National Arena.
When both teams took to the court there were only 10 players, with none on the wings. This led to both teams' defence and attack playing overtime to compensate for the shortfall. There were many time-outs and both teams were obviously tired long before half-time, some reducing the pace to a walk and becoming alert only when the ball reached their third.
Still, both teams stuck to the task and defended as best they could. They, however, failed many times in the circle because of inaccurate shooting.
"The Waulgrovians team, they executed better than us. They waited for the ball to come to them before taking a shot. Waulgrovians was a little bit fitter, they deserved to win," said Molynes coach Roy Pryce.
"My players were trying their best, I just look at this as a training session because this is Open League."
Waulgrovian coach Hughan McCleary explained that he prepared his team both physically and mentally to perform under any condition.
"I would say it was a challenging game for both teams but based on our training and the conditioning I knew we would manage," said McCleary.
"I asked them to play netball and make simple passes, simple defence. When you get the ball, one shot."
