Hosts Wolmer's Boys handed St. George's College their first defeat of the 2006-2007 ISSA/KFC Schoolboy Under-19 Basketball Competition with an 80-67 trashing.
In other games, Ardenne defeated defending champions St. Catherine 59-54 and St. Jago edged Jamaica College 68-66.
Came out firing
At Wolmer's, the home team, led by a team high 20 points and eight rebounds from Christopher Vassell, came out firing on all cylinders in the first period and went in at the half-time break with a 39-27 lead.
On the resumption, Wolmer's continued to dominate the game as they ended the third quarter leading 65-52.Vassell was well supported by teammates Adrian Blake with 11 points and Craig-Anthony Ferguson with 10.
However, St. George's College came storming back in the fourth period with Joscelyn Campbell scoring a game-high 27-points. He scored 10 straight unanswered points to cut the deficit to eight with less than three minutes remaining but the 'Maroon and Gold' tightened their defence in the final two minutes to hang on for their third victory of the season.
"It was a good contested game on both teams' part," said Howard Harvey, coach of Wolmer's.
"I think my team came out with a game plan which was a full-court press, which is our natural game."
He continued: "I am not overall satisfied with my team's performance because I think that we had a lot more turnovers today because we were rushing the game, and I also think that we should have scored a lot more points."
